Democratic Committees, Leaders Schumer and Jeffries File Lawsuit to Block Trump’s Executive Order to Undermine Elections
March 31, 2025
Democrats challenge Trump’s attempt to violate the Constitution and multiple federal laws, and attack the rights of married women, members of the military, and mail voters
In response to Trump’s illegal Executive Order that attempts to suppress voters, upend voter registration systems and hand over sensitive information to DOGE, stop states from counting eligible mail ballots, and withhold federal election funding from dozens of states in the process, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Democratic Governors Association (DGA), Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and Democratic Senate and House leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, have sued President Trump, DOGE, and other departments within the Trump Administration in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block this order.
DNC Chair Ken Martin, DGA Chair Laura Kelly, DSCC Chair Kirsten Gillibrand, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:
“This executive order is an unconstitutional power grab from Donald Trump that attacks vote by mail, gives DOGE sensitive personal information and makes it harder for states to run their own free and fair elections. It will even make it harder for military members serving overseas and married women who have changed their name to have their votes count. Donald Trump and DOGE are doing this as an attempt to rationalize their repeatedly debunked conspiracy theories and set the groundwork to throw out legal votes and ignore election outcomes they do not like. It’s anti-American and Democrats are using every tool at our disposal – including taking Trump to court – to stop this illegal overreach that undermines our democracy.”

Summary of Trump’s Illegal Executive Order:
- Attacks dozens of States that properly and lawfully allow mail ballots cast by Election Day to count if received within a certain time frame;
- Forces numerous federal agencies to reveal sensitive personal information about millions of voters to the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) without any consent or statutory authority;
- Tramples upon the independence and bipartisan structure of the Election Assistance Commission (“EAC”), an agency created in the wake of the 2000 presidential election to improve election administration and voter access in coordination with States; and
- Threatens to deprive States of crucial federal grants needed to fund elections and law enforcement if they do not follow the President’s commands at the detriment of voters.
