Democratic Minnesota House Candidate David Gottfried Wins Special Election, Blocks Republican House Majority

Democrats clinched victory in the House District 40B race, successfully blocking Republicans from gaining a majority in the state House

Washington, DC – Today, the DNC congratulates Democratic candidate David Gottfried for his victory in tonight’s Minnesota legislative special election. Thanks to this victory, the Minnesota House remains at a tie – giving House Democrats a fighting chance to defend against the GOP’s extreme attacks on reproductive freedom, labor, and working families.

Gottfried’s victory comes on the heels of special election victories earlier this year in Virginia, Iowa, and other states across the country as Democrats build back power starting at the grassroots. While Trump and MAGA Republicans govern for the ultra-wealthy, Democrats fight for working people, community by community, block by block. The message is clear: Americans are sick of Trump’s antics and are ready to reject him and his Republican lackeys at the ballot box.

In response to this pivotal victory, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“As a proud Minnesotan, I’m honored to congratulate David Gottfried on his crucial special election victory. Minnesota is a shining example of what can happen under Democratic leadership: providing free breakfast and lunch for K-12 students, investing in mental health services, strengthening worker protections, establishing paid family and medical leave, and enshrining protections for reproductive freedom into law. Since November’s election, Democrats continue to fight and win in communities across the country.”
