DHS Spokesperson Resigns Post As Trump’s Polling on Immigration Plummets

New reporting today revealed that Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, who has become the public face of the administration’s immigration policy, is expected to leave the administration as the Trump administration’s approval rating on immigration continues to plummet following the chaos and violence in Minneapolis. A majority of Americans, including 68% of independents, say ICE’s actions are making America less safe. Additionally, 63% of voters disapprove of ICE’s immigration enforcement, and Navigator polling shows net approval of ICE down to -22. Trump’s overall approval rating continues to tank, and he’s underwater on immigration (-20), once considered his strongest issue.

During her tenure, McLaughlin repeatedly lied about Trump’s cruel and reckless deportation campaign. She defended violent federal immigration agents, defended the separation of immigrant families, threatened to prosecute people who film or photograph ICE agents, and fervently defended the sharing of personal data with DHS agencies to target immigrants.

On top of that, DHS awarded more than $200 million of taxpayer money in ad contracts to the firm of McLaughlin’s husband.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

After the chaos and violence that unfolded in Minneapolis at the hands of federal immigration agents, it’s no surprise that the mouthpiece for the Trump administration’s cruel and reckless deportation campaign is stepping down. Tricia McLaughlin defended even the most violent tactics of Donald Trump’s deportation operation and smeared innocent Americans in the process. But one resignation isn’t enough. Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, and Corey Lewandowski should all be fired immediately.”
