DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on the Anniversary of the Fair Labor Standards Act

WASHINGTON –  DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement:

“Thanks to American workers and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), our economy has long been the envy of the world. The FLSA made American workers safer, more productive and more prosperous by instituting the 40-hour work week, the minimum wage, restrictions on child labor, and overtime pay. As President Franklin Roosevelt understood when he signed the law 78 years ago, our nation succeeds most when workers earn their fair share of the profits.

“Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump isn’t a fan of the FLSA. Throughout his business career and on the campaign trail, Trump has shown he has no interest in rewarding hard work – all he cares about is his own personal gain. He actually said wages are too high, and that he opposes raising the federal minimum wage. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Trump’s companies have been cited 24 times since 2005 for failing to pay overtime or the minimum wage and violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. His unlicensed, unaccredited Trump University targeted veterans and the elderly, convincing them to tap into their savings without giving them anything of value in return. Trump rooted for the housing crisis, hoping to profit as hardworking families lost their homes and savings. And most recently, with uncertainty in the world economy following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, Trump saw yet another opportunity to enrich himself at the expense of others, saying that if the pound goes down, more people would visit his luxury Scottish golf course.

“Democrats believe that our people are our greatest strength; that a hard day’s work should be rewarded with fair pay; and that our economy should work for everyone, not just those at the top. For too long, the wages of American workers have stagnated because Republicans obstruct efforts to raise the minimum wage and push policies that reward the wealthy instead of America’s middle class. Donald Trump’s policies are no different and his recklessness would be a disaster for American workers and our economy if elected. We must elect Democrats up and down the ballot and a Democrat as our next president to fight for hardworking families and higher wages once more.”
