DNC Chair Ken Martin on Texas Republicans’ Rigged Congressional Map Getting Struck Down in Federal Court

Texas Republicans’ congressional map represented a blatant disenfranchisement of Black and brown voters

Today, a federal court struck down Texas Republicans’ rigged congressional maps that diluted Black and brown representation. Texas Republicans passed these maps to avoid accountability for congressional Republicans passing Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, which rips away health care from hundreds of thousands of Texans and puts 15 rural hospitals on the brink of closure.

A reminder: Texas Democrats fought valiantly against this passage, breaking quorum for two weeks and enduring bomb threats, threats against their families, frivolous lawsuits, and unlawful detainment.

In response to a federal court striking down Texas Republicans’ rigged, racially gerrymandered Congressional maps, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“In a win for Texas voters, a federal court today blocked Texas Republicans’ attempt to racially gerrymander their congressional maps. Texas Democrats and the DNC fought valiantly for fair representation, and now, with this decision, the court has ruled that Texas Republicans cannot implement this blatant gerrymander in the next election. These maps were only introduced in the first place because Donald Trump and his Texas Republican allies are afraid of facing voters after the passage of their Big Ugly Bill. They expected Democrats to roll over, but instead, Democrats in Texas and across the country rose up and fought back. Texas Democrats ignited a spark to fight against Republican cheating, and the DNC and Democrats across the country have answered their call. Regardless of what Texas Republicans try next, Democrats are fighting for democracy and fair representation every step of the way.”
