DNC Chair Ken Martin Slams North Carolina’s Rigged Map

Yesterday, North Carolina Republicans unveiled their proposed Congressional map that targets Democratic Congressman Don Davis, who represents the First Congressional District, the only majority-minority district in the state.

North Carolina is already one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. Ten Republicans and only 4 Democrats represent the state in Congress, despite the fact that the state continues to elect Democrats statewide.

This announcement is part of Trump and Republicans’ scheme to rig Congressional maps across the country in their favor ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Trump is trying to rig these maps because he knows how deeply unpopular his Big Ugly Bill is, which causes 450,000 North Carolinians to lose their health insurance and puts five rural hospitals on the brink of closure.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“From challenging Section Two of the Voting Rights Act this week to producing a rigged map in North Carolina that targets the only majority-minority district in the state, Donald Trump and his Republican allies continue to undermine the voting power of minority communities. Donald Trump is actively scheming to rig maps across the country because he knows his disastrous first year will cost him the 2026 midterm elections. His ‘signature’ achievement, the Big Ugly Bill, kicks almost half a million families off their health care in North Carolina and puts five rural hospitals on the brink of closure. The DNC will continue supporting North Carolina Democrats who are fighting tooth and nail against Trump’s attempts to cheat because every North Carolinian deserves fair representation.”
