DNC Chair Ken Martin Statement on Senate Vote on Iran War Powers Resolution

Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), and U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) forced a vote on a War Powers Resolution to block Donald Trump from taking further military action in Iran and reassert congressional control over the power to declare war.

The Trump administration has failed to provide the American people with a clear justification for the “ongoing” major combat operations in Iran. Their timelines are unclear and there appears to be no clear exit plan.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has trampled on the Constitution and ignored the will of the American people by choosing to enter into a deadly and deeply unpopular war with Iran without approval from Congress. Today, Senate Republicans rejected an opportunity to rein in this unconstitutional power grab that has already cost several American lives and billions of dollars in taxpayer money. Senate Republicans had a chance to stand up and say ‘no more,’ but they have made their priorities clear: Trump First, Americans Last.”
