DNC Chair on Oklahoma Teachers’ Walkout

Today, thousands of Oklahoma teachers are taking to the streets to demand adequate school funding and better wages, including pay raises for custodians, bus drivers, and food service workers. DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Oklahoma teachers and support professionals deserve better, and they are raising their voices today asking for fair pay and the basic resources necessary to teach our kids. The Republican leadership in the Sooner State has failed teachers and students. No child should have their schooling cut back to only 4 days of classes each week. No teacher should be forced to work a second job to make ends meet. But this is the sad reality that Republican politicians have created in Oklahoma. Instead of investing in the education Oklahoma children deserve, Republicans have cut funds for schools, supplies, and teachers’ wages while passing massive tax giveaways for big corporations. Democrats stand with Oklahoma teachers as they fight for the fair pay they deserve and the resources their students need.”
