DNC Chair Slams Trump for Attacking Michigan Workers by Threatening to Shut Down the Gordie Howe Bridge

Last night, Donald Trump threatened to shut down the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is vital for Michigan workers and the state’s economy, including more than 6,000 workers who are expected to commute to work daily on the bridge.

Detroit’s automakers have long supported the construction of this bridge to expedite the delivery of auto parts and create thousands of high-paying union jobs in Michigan. Trump himself admitted how important the bridge is for Michigan and the American economy, calling it a “vital economic link” connecting Michigan and its biggest trading partner.

Trump’s threat to shut down the bridge comes just days after he doubled down on his attempts to freeze the Gateway Tunnel Project, which over 200,000 New Jersey and New York workers rely on to commute to work and creates 72,000 local jobs.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is once again taking a sledgehammer to Michigan’s workers and economy. The Gordie Howe Bridge creates high-paying union jobs, grows the state’s economy, and supports over 6,000 daily commuters. Are Republicans going to choose Trump’s job-killing nonsense over Michigan workers? It’s time Michigan Republicans pick a side. It’s a no-brainer for Democrats: We’re on the side of Michigan workers.”
