DNC Chair Statement on House Republicans’ Amendment
July 9, 2015
Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement in response to House Republicans’ tone-deaf stance on the Confederate Flag:
“The last 24 hours in the House of Representatives are some of the darkest I have witnessed as a Member of Congress.
“The American people need to know that their GOP-controlled Congress deceitfully pursued an effort to defend the Confederate Flag.
“This is an example of the GOP’s abhorrent tone-deafness to what is happening across the nation in the wake of the Charleston tragedy, as South Carolina is set to remove this symbol of hatred from their capitol tomorrow and the American people engage in a dialogue to move past our history of racial prejudice and towards a more tolerant future.
“The leaders of the Republican Party should be ashamed. Their party’s insistence on clinging to a symbol of a shameful, racist period in American history is hurting our nation and places them in league with an ugly legacy.”
