DNC Chair Statement on National Voter Registration Day
September 22, 2015
Washington, D.C. – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement today in honor of National Voter Registration Day:
“Today is National Voter Registration Day. Over the years, our nation has grown stronger as we guarantee more Americans the right to vote. By educating and encouraging potential voters to register, we ensure that more Americans are able to exercise this fundamental right.
“Fifty years after the Voting Rights Act became law, it is difficult to believe that many in the Republican Party are trying to make voting harder instead of easier. Restrictive voter ID laws, cutting back early voting periods, and eliminating same day registration are moves that disproportionately harm women, students, seniors, and communities of color.
“Through the DNC and the Voter Expansion Project, it is our mission to ensure every eligible voter is registered, every registered voter is able to vote, and that every vote is accurately counted. As Democrats, we believe that our nation and our democracy are stronger when more people participate.”
