DNC Chair Statement on Rick Perry’s 2016 Announcement

Washington, D.C. – With Rick Perry’s announcement that he is running for president, DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“Under Rick Perry’s tenure as governor, two Texases emerged. In one, his allies and special interests did well, benefiting from billions in tax breaks for big business and the wealthiest Texans. But in the other, it was working families and the poor who bore the burden of Perry’s policies. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation, but Perry refused to expand Medicaid. Texas is the state with the most minimum wage workers, but Perry opposed raising the minimum wage. Perry also vetoed equal pay legislation and slashed billions from education funding.

“Rick Perry’s failed tenure as governor of Texas tells us everything we need to know about why he should never and won’t ever be President of the United States.”
