DNC Chair Statement on Supreme Court Oral Argument in Evenwel v. Abbott
December 8, 2015
DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on today’s oral argument in Evenwel v. Abbott:
“Every single person living in America deserves equal representation and deserves to be counted in our democracy; that’s why the Constitution requires it in congressional districts. Sue Evenwel and her conservative backers are engaged in an egregious attack to deny millions of people representation in state legislative districts. This is an assault on our democracy and threatens the ability of elected officials across the country to adequately represent and serve our communities. Our children and everyone living in our communities deserve a voice even if they are not able to cast a ballot.
“When I took the oath of office, I pledged to serve all of my constituents. That’s true regardless of who they were or how they voted. As elected officials, we cannot allow anyone to be disenfranchised if we are serious about the integrity of our democracy. This case threatens to exclude every single child under 18 and far too many hardworking taxpayers across the country. Here’s the bottom line: in America everyone counts. Any effort to undermine this notion weakens our democracy and Democrats will oppose it.”
