DNC Chair Statement on Trump, Republican Response to American Intelligence on Russian Hacking
December 12, 2016
WASHINGTON – DNC Interim Chair Donna Brazile issued the following statement:
“Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election is not a matter of opinion – it is a matter of fact, confirmed by the experts in our Intelligence Community. And yet, Donald Trump and members of his team still blatantly deny the validity of the American intelligence on the matter. Additionally, some Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, were reportedly made aware of the Russian government’s alleged intent before the election, but chose to stay silent instead of alerting the public. If true, it means they chose to put partisan politics ahead of the national security interests of all Americans.
“The Democratic Party is calling on members of the House and Senate, Republican and Democratic alike, to hold the Trump administration accountable for their denial of the truth, and to immediately investigate the extent and consequences of Russia’s meddling in our election. We support a proposal to establish an independent, bipartisan commission by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and Intelligence Committee Member Eric Swalwell. Our national security absolutely cannot be and must not become a partisan issue.”
