DNC Chair Tom Perez on 82nd Anniversary of Social Security
August 14, 2017
DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement on the 82nd anniversary of the Social Security Act:
“When President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, he said that this historic law would bring ‘protection to the average citizen’ and their family. Eight decades later, Social Security remains a cornerstone of our society, helping ensure the dignity of a secure retirement for millions of American families.
“Despite his campaign promise to protect Social Security, President Trump has proposed a budget that would cut billions from the program and leave some of our most vulnerable citizens without the economic security they deserve. Democrats believe that Social Security is a solemn promise that strengthens our middle class and expands opportunity all Americans. As we celebrate this anniversary, we must continue to protect this vital program against the attacks of this administration and fight for the prosperity of generations to come.”
