DNC Chair Tom Perez on August Jobs Report

After the U.S. Department of Labor released the latest jobs and unemployment numbers, DNC Chair and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez released the following statement:

“President Trump’s erratic behavior and reckless economic policies are causing uncertainty and angst for the American worker. Wage growth is flat. Manufacturing is in decline. And job growth continues to slow.

“Trump has utterly failed to fight for working families. He gave a massive tax break to his wealthy friends. And instead of building an economy that works for everyone, he spends all day on Twitter spewing obvious lies and petty insults. The American people have had enough of this ineffective president and his Republican enablers, and that’s why they’re going to vote for Democratic leadership up and down the ballot next November.”

Today’s jobs report is only the latest in recent poor economic data:

  • The manufacturing industry contracted for the first time during Trump’s presidency.

  • Small business confidence fell to the lowest level since 2012.

  • Consumer confidence fell the most in six years, and is now at the lowest level of Trump’s presidency.

  • Construction spending fell to a seven-month low.

  • Real average hourly and weekly earnings for all workers and for production and nonsupervisory workers declined for the month of July.
