Tonight, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi soundly defeated her far-right Republican opponent, John Reid.

Hashmi presented a positive vision for the Commonwealth. She centered her successful campaign on the issues that affect families the most, including how she will work with Governor-elect Spanberger to lower costs and invest in high-quality education and child care.

In stark contrast, her opponent defended Donald Trump’s billionaire-first agenda that causes 350,000 Virginians to lose health insurance, puts six rural hospitals at risk of closure, and destroys tens of thousands of jobs.

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement: 

“Lieutenant Governor-elect Hashmi ran a brilliantly focused campaign all about lowering costs, growing Virginia’s economy, and ensuring our kids have access to high-quality child care and education. While Republicans like John Reid put Donald Trump over the needs of their constituents, Democrats like Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger and Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi are standing up to Trump and fighting for Virginia’s families. Make no mistake: Tonight’s victory is part of a larger trend of Democratic victories and overperformances, and that should terrify Donald Trump and the Republican Party ahead of the midterms in 2026.”

Heading into tonight, Democrats had won or overperformed in 46 out of 47 key elections this year. Democrats will enter 2026 with strong momentum heading into the midterms, as the DNC continues to invest in organizing and building power across the country.
