DNC, EMILYs List President and State Leaders Slam Trump for Ownership of 22 State Abortion Bans and Plans to Dismantle Reproductive Rights Nationwide
July 31, 2024
Today, the DNC hosted a press call featuring leaders from states with abortion bans to hold Donald Trump accountable for his role in overturning Roe v. Wade and paving the way for MAGA Republicans to rip away reproductive freedom from women across the states, as well as emphasize the danger of Trump and Vance’s Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide. The discussion with EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler, reproductive rights advocate Amanda Zurawski, Oklahoma state Representative Cyndi Munson, Florida state Representative Fentrice Driskell, and Texas state Representative Donna Howard came after Iowa’s restrictive abortion ban – the 22nd ban in the country so far – went into effect on Monday, which ripped away life-saving health care from millions more women.
These leaders know the stakes of Donald Trump’s dangerous Project 2025 plan to ban abortion nationwide. Along with millions of women in their states, they live under these bans too. Trump and MAGA Republicans orchestrated the fall of Roe v. Wade, and since have ushered in extreme abortion bans in states across the country. Trump has called these cruel bans “beautiful” and just one day before Iowa became the 22nd state in the country to implement a ban, Trump doubled down, saying these bans are “going to work out incredibly well.” Alongside his extremist running mate JD Vance, who once called for a “federal response” to obstruct women from traveling for abortion care and has said that he “would like abortion to be illegal nationally,” Trump will continue to roll back women’s rights and dismantle reproductive freedom nationwide.
Find highlights from the press call below:
“We don’t have to wonder what a Republican-controlled future will look like for women in America because, as we’ve heard today from Amanda’s story, from leaders of Republican controlled states, it’s already happening to women all over America. Women are living with the devastating consequences of what Trump and MAGA Republicans have wrought upon us. They will not stop until they have full control of when and how we have families, and that comes with life and death consequences, ” said EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler. “But we can change that future. We can restore our rights. We can beat back further Republican attacks, and we can do that by securing pro-choice majorities up and down the ballot.”
“It took three days and a near-death crash into septic shock before my doctor could finally provide the health care that I desperately needed. After stabilizing my vitals enough to deliver our baby, who we named Willow, I crashed again with another bout of sepsis and was transferred to the ICU. I was there for three days and my family flew in from across the country for fear that I wouldn’t pull through. It was in that dark and lonely hospital room where I realized that I was actually lucky because I lived. And I knew others might not be so lucky,” said Amanda Zurawski. “What I went through was nothing short of barbaric, and it didn’t need to happen. But it did – because of Donald Trump. Over and over again, Trump has bragged about ‘killing’ Roe v. Wade. He calls state abortion bans a ‘beautiful thing to watch.’ It is unthinkable to me that anyone could cheer on the cruel abortion bans that nearly cost me my life. But he does.”
“Oklahoma, a lot like Texas, decided to take an extremist stance on abortion access here in our state. I’ve served in the legislature now for nine years, and every year that I’ve been in the legislature, there has been some anti-aboriton legislation that we have voted on that House Democrats have opposed since I have been elected,” said Oklahoma state Rep. Cyndi Munson. “As we’re out knocking doors and talking to voters and my constituents in this election cycle, Oklahomans are very aware of the danger of another Trump presidency and what could be done – not just continued harm in Oklahoma, but across our nation.”
“What’s become clear to me – not even in my own district, but as I travel the state – is that the majority of Floridians want to protect access to a safe and legal abortion. We need to put this to rest, and hopefully we’ll have the opportunity to do that this fall,” said Florida state Rep. Fentrice Driskell. “What we see from former president Trump and his ilk is that they want people to fit a very specific mold. They want to control our bodies, control our choices, they’re trying to even suppress our stories and control our voices. And if you don’t fit that mold, then there’s no room for you in their version of America. By contrast, what we want and what I believe the Vice President wants is for people to have the freedom to be healthy, prosperous, and safe, and that certainly starts with your own autonomy and your own freedom to make the best decisions for you and your family without government interference. We’re talking about very intimate decisions of heart and home. And frankly, there’s no room for Tallahassee politicians, or even Washington D.C. politicians.”
“Donald Trump represents a direct attack on women and on our families. Nationally, Republicans have followed suit. This year, Senate Republicans have voted against protecting access to contraception and IVF. If Trump and Vance are elected, they will enable and encourage Republicans to keep working to rip back our right to choose,” said Texas state Rep. Donna Howard. “In the years since he set the stage to overturn Roe v. Wade, Trump has not stopped bragging about his role in walking back access to abortion. We know he never will. He says he is ‘proud to have done it,’ that without him, ‘the Pro-Life movement would have just kept losing.’ He is telling us [his] plans – we need to hear him. Women and families in Texas know what is at stake if Trump makes it back into the Oval Office, which is why we will not let him set foot there again.”
