DNC Joint Statement on International Women’s Day
March 8, 2017
WASHINGTON – DNC Chair Tom Perez and DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford issued the following joint statement on International Women’s Day:
“The Democratic Party is proud to stand in solidarity with women around the world marching for progress and striving for true equality. We believe in equal pay, more affordable health care, paid family leave, investing in education and educators, and putting an end to violence against women. We believe in passing laws that ensure the United States remains a leader on women’s rights on the world stage. And we will not back down when it comes to fighting Donald Trump and his Party as they try to turn back the clock.
“Today is also A Day Without A Woman – a day when millions of women are staying away from the workplace to demonstrate their economic power while raising awareness of inequality and gender discrimination. Working women contribute $7.6 trillion to our GDP each year. In four out of ten American households with children, the mother is either the sole or primary breadwinner. It’s long past time we make sure that women are guaranteed the same pay as men for doing the same work.
“Happy International Women’s Day!”
