DNC on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tom Perez released the following statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

“Today, we honor one of history’s greatest champions for justice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to the promise of true equality in America. He inspired millions to march and ride, to stand up, sit-in, and speak out against the poison of prejudice. He understood that civil rights and economic opportunity are inextricably linked. And he taught us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

“While we have made great progress over the last half century, injustice and inequality still persist in our society. Too many people of color face barriers to the ballot box. Too many police departments are not held accountable to the communities they’re sworn to protect. Too many lives are shattered by the systemic discrimination at the heart of our criminal justice system. And too many families are denied the economic and educational opportunities they deserve.

“As we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy, we must recommit ourselves to the same principles he and so many other heroes have fought for: justice, equality, and opportunity for all.”
