DNC on GM Layoffs and Trump’s Broken Promises

Following General Motors’ announcement that they plan to lay off workers at its Warren, Michigan plant, DNC Spokesperson Daniel Wessel issued the following statement:

“While Democrats are working to create more good-paying jobs right here in America, Donald Trump has offered nothing but bluster and broken promises. Democrats will continue to fight to create opportunity for hardworking Americans through efforts to raise wages, provide greater access to quality, affordable education and job training, and push for tax reform that prioritizes middle-class families instead of millionaires and billionaires.

“Trump has said he would be a jobs president, but so far all he has done is try to take credit for other people’s work. And now we learn that General Motors plans to lay off workers at its plant in Warren, Michigan where Trump once stood and promised he’d protect their jobs. Where is Trump’s tweet now? Instead of saving these workers’ jobs, Trump seems too busy trying to save his own.”

NOW:

General Motors announces layoffs at its Warren, Michigan plant.

CNN Money: “The automaker will eliminate one of two shifts at its Warren, Michigan plant, which makes transmissions. The company won't say how many jobs will be affected, but the cuts could eliminate about half of the nearly 600 jobs at the plant.”

THEN:

Trump promised voters in Warren, Michigan “If I’m elected, you won’t lose one plant…you’re going to have jobs again.”

TRUMP: “If I’m elected, you won’t lose one plant, you’ll have plant coming into this country, you’re going to have jobs again, you won’t lose one plant, I promise you that and if Ford and the other ones having started building their plant they’ll be back believe me before they start building their plant, believe me. The polls have been great. What happened is Michigan has been won in many, many years, decades and I said, well wait a minute. Why aren’t I doing well in Michigan they said you are, you are even.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Warren MI, 10/31/16]

Trump had a meeting with GM CEO Mary Barra and said after that they were talking about building in the U.S. because of him.

TRUMP: “Call Mary Barra, head of General Motors. You could call Fiat. You know, you could call Fiat. You could call—we had that meeting. They’re all talking about building in the United States because of me.”

As president, Trump took credit for General Motors hiring decisions.

TRUMP: “Thank You To General Motors And Walmart For Starting The Big Jobs Push Back Into The U.S.!”
