DNC on GOP’s Silence After Scott Wagner’s Violent Threat to Governor Tom Wolf
October 12, 2018
DNC Spokesperson Elizabeth Renda issued the following statement on the RNC’s silence after Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee Scott Wagner said that Governor Tom Wolf “better put a catcher’s mask on your face, because I’m going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes”:
“Once again, the Republican Party of Donald Trump has reached a new level of hypocrisy. Just 12 days after calling for ‘a return to manners, a return to respect, and a return to the politics of decency,’ Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee Scott Wagner has threatened to ‘stomp all over’ Governor Tom Wolf’s face ‘with golf spikes.’ This disgusting comment comes less than 24 hours after the RNC released an ad accusing Democrats of being ‘unhinged.’
“This morning, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel even said in a Fox and Friends interview that Democrats ‘should know that words matter;’ called for Democratic leaders to denounce protesters; and blamed Democratic leaders for ‘dangerous rhetoric,’ even suggesting falsely that they were inciting deadly violence. Yet, today, after calling on Democrats to ‘step up’ and refute comments she objected to, McDaniel and the rest of the RNC are refusing to speak out against Scott Wagner’s abhorrent, explicitly violent threat.
“The Republican Party thinks the American people are blind to their blatant hypocrisy, but their silence in the face of these comments just hours after the release of their publicity stunt advertisement is outrageous. Come November, voters across the country will send a clear message about the values they’ve seen the RNC embrace time and again — from today’s deafening hypocritical silence to their decision to support alleged child molester Roy Moore’s failed Senate bid to their embrace of policy after policy that puts the wealthy before working families.”
