DNC on Native American Heritage Day

To honor and celebrate the heritage of America’s Indigenous people, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Native American Caucus Chair Rion Ramirez released the following statement:

“On this Native American Heritage Day, we honor and celebrate Native American and Alaska Natives’ countless contributions that have advanced our nation. Today, we also recognize the wrongs of the past and commit ourselves to making certain that the rights and dignity of our country’s first people are upheld.

“The Biden administration is taking actionable steps to protect and uplift Tribal Nations including issuing a new executive order that prioritizes the improvement of public safety and the recovery of missing or murdered Indigenous people. President Biden’s newly signed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also addresses specific issues in Native communities by investing over $3 billion in Native health services and helping build climate change resilience.

“Democrats understand that progress in this country can only be achieved after we reflect upon the injustice inflicted in the past. As part of our celebration of our 574 Tribal Nations, we pledge to continue working with them to address the issues facing their communities, honor their sovereignty, and safeguard their rights.”
