DNC on Native American Heritage Month

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and Native American Caucus Chair Rion Ramirez released the following joint statement on Native American Heritage Month:

“This Native American Heritage Month, we recognize the numerous contributions Native Americans and Alaska Natives in America have made to our country as the first peoples. We take this time to clearly reflect upon our history and to ensure the significant challenges Native people have faced are never perpetrated again.

“The Biden-Harris administration is committed to lifting up Native communities and increasing Native representation, including by appointing Deb Haaland as the first Native Cabinet Secretary. President Biden and Democrats are continuing the fight for the issues most important to Tribes, including historic funding to combat climate change in the Build Back Better framework, and restoring protections to lands and waters sacred to Tribal Nations, such as Bears Ears National Monument.

“America cannot move forward until we acknowledge and reflect upon the wrongs of the past. This month, we celebrate the 574 Tribal Nations and commit ourselves to upholding Tribal sovereignty, self-determination, protecting the right to vote, justice and equity.”
