DNC on Signing of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement in response to the signing of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022:

“Yesterday’s bill signing is a testament to the power of Mamie Till Mobley. In her darkest moment, she ensured that her son, Emmett Till — the namesake for this historic legislation — would never be forgotten. Without her courage and advocacy, without the leadership of Ida B. Wells and so many more through the years, we would not be here today.

“The Emmett Till Antilynching Act of 2022 is over 100 years in the making. While it cannot bring back Emmett Till or the countless named and nameless victims of lynching throughout American history, its passage is an important, long-needed step. Finally, our criminal code will reflect our national intolerance for this heinous, hateful criminal act.

“I’m grateful to the president, vice president, and the leaders in Congress who championed this bill. The Democratic Party will continue fighting to ensure all Americans have the legal protections and civil rights to which they are entitled.”
