DNC on Social Security Anniversary

DNC Chair Tom Perez and DNC Seniors Council Chair Steve Regenstreif released the following statement celebrating the anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act into law:

“For more than 80 years, Social Security has provided economic security to generations of Americans. Millions of retirees, working families, and Americans with disabilities rely on the Social Security benefits they have earned so they can live and retire with the dignity they deserve.

“While Democrats are fighting to protect and expand Social Security, Donald Trump and Republicans have threatened to privatize and cut it. They’ve voted to increase the retirement age, slash Social Security benefits, and gut the program’s protections for injured and disabled workers. And they're using the Trump tax bill, which adds nearly $2 trillion to the deficit, as an excuse to make deep cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other vital programs.

“Democrats are proud to be the party that created Social Security, and we are proud to mobilize working, disabled, and retired Americans to vote for candidates who will be champions for Social Security this November.”
