DNC on the Passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement on the passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver:

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver. A genuine force for good, she exemplified the very best of what a public servant should be – humble, selfless, and always looking to extend a hand to those who needed it the most.

“As a public servant for nearly thirty years, Lt. Governor Oliver was no stranger to breaking glass ceilings and inspiring millions of women and girls in the process. She was the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly – the second Black woman in our country to lead a legislative chamber – and the first woman of color elected to statewide office in New Jersey. She will be greatly missed, but I have no doubt that her legacy will live on in the lives she touched through her lifetime of service.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Lt. Oliver’s family and loved ones as they grieve the loss of their beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. May she rest in peace.”
