DNC on Trump Administration’s Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Agreement

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement after Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA):

“Donald Trump’s reckless decision today makes the world less safe. By withdrawing from the JCPOA, the president is threatening our national security, undermining American credibility, isolating us from our partners and allies, and abandoning our commitments under this agreement.

“The JCPOA was designed to peacefully and permanently dismantle Iran’s nuclear program and verifiably cut off all of Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon. Now Trump has set the world on a path to crisis and conflict with no plan whatsoever to continue preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. This is the epitome of putting partisan politics above the safety and security of the American people.

“Democrats believe that diplomacy is a vital tool for ensuring our national security, and that Iran must be held accountable for its violations of human rights, its ballistic missile program, its threats against Israel, and its sponsorship of terrorism.

“The JCPOA has successfully put a lid on Iran’s nuclear program, and the U.S. should continue imposing strict sanctions to aggressively counter Iran’s destabilizing actions in the region. Unilaterally withdrawing from this agreement is a major strategic mistake.”
