DNC on Voting Rights Legislation

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement in response to Senate Republicans once again blocking a vote on voting rights legislation:

“Today, 50 Democrats in the Senate executed the will of the people and voted to advance the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Maddeningly, in our current system, that is not enough.

“But let me be clear, the fight is not over. Republicans have abandoned their commitment to voting rights. They may think their combination of conspiracy and obstruction will shake our commitment to voting rights, but they have gravely underestimated the strength of our conviction and the power of the American people.

“Today is a reminder that real change happens from the bottom up. It’s a reminder of the importance of the 2022 midterm elections. We can send more Democrats to the US Senate and give President Biden and Vice President Harris the votes they need to pass voting rights legislation. We can show those who stand in the way of voting rights that their actions have consequences.

“The Democratic Party has built its largest voter protection team ever, earlier than ever before, and I guarantee we will do everything in our power to mitigate the effects of Republicans’ Jim Crow 2.0. We will continue to organize, register, and educate voters on their rights. We will hold Republicans accountable and take them to court for their illegal voter suppression and gerrymandering efforts. We are undeterred.

“When John Lewis met opposition on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, when protestors were beaten by Jim Clark and his gang on that Bloody Sunday, they didn’t give up. They showed up two days later and kept marching. Let’s keep marching.

“In November, let’s put the Republican Party on notice. Let’s turn out in numbers they have never seen before. Let’s show them that when you come for our votes, we fight back.”
