DNC Responds: Real Wages Declined in July
August 13, 2019
In response to real average weekly and hourly wages declining in July, DNC Deputy War Room Director Daniel Wessel released the following statement:
“Trump promised he’d raise workers’ wages, but he hasn’t. Instead, wages have remained stagnant throughout his presidency, and real wages actually declined last month. It’s no wonder that Americans across the country are not feeling the benefits of our economy.”
Real average hourly and weekly earnings for all workers declined last month.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Real average hourly earnings for all employees decreased 0.1 percent from June to July, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today… Real average weekly earnings decreased 0.3 percent over the month due to the decrease of 0.1 percent in real average hourly earnings combined with a decrease of 0.3 percent in the average workweek.”
Real average hourly and weekly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers, who make up 80% of the workforce, declined by even more last month.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees decreased 0.2 percent from June to July, seasonally adjusted… Real average weekly earnings decreased 0.5 percent over the month due to the decrease of 0.2 percent in real average hourly earnings combined with a decrease of 0.3 percent in average weekly hours.”
