DNC Statement Ahead of Tim Scott’s Iowa Visit
August 28, 2022
As Tim Scott heads to Iowa to campaign with Ashley Hinson, Kim Reynolds, and Chuck Grassley, DNC spokesperson Ammar Moussa released the following statement:
“While Tim Scott campaigns in Iowa instead of his own state, we’re here to remind Iowa families that Senator Scott was a cheerleader in the Senate for handing out billions in tax cuts to big corporations and the ultra-wealthy while leaving the middle class out to dry. Scott’s record supporting policies that could jeopardize Medicare and Social Security, undermining unions, and calling to repeal the Affordable Care Act make abundantly clear how extreme and dangerous Scott and Republicans’ agenda is for working Americans.”
Scott’s Opportunity Zones initiative gave tax breaks to wealthy real estate developers while largely leaving the small businesses and low-income communities it was supposed to help out to dry.
PBS: “Trump-era Opportunity Zones meant to help low-income communities exploited by investors”
The New York Times: “A new tax break that President Trump frequently touts as a boon to black Americans and hard-hit communities is spurring relatively little job creation while disproportionately helping high-profit real estate projects and not small businesses, an extensive new study by the Urban Institute has found.”
Scott was an architect of the GOP Tax Scam that cheated middle-class families and gave huge tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.
The Washington Post: “Scott: ‘In 2017, I was one of the architects of reforming the personal side of the tax code.’”
Iowa Starting Line: “GOP Tax Plan Hurt Farmers, Small Businesses”
The Quad-City Times: “Richest Iowans benefit from proposed GOP tax plan”
For years, Tim Scott has supported efforts that could jeopardize Medicare and Social Security.
Island Packet: “Kicking off his speech by asking different sections of the audience to sing ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ to President Barack Obama, Scott voiced his support for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security reform, spending cuts and tax reform to combat the federal debt. He said he sided with Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal, which retools Medicare into a private insurance program with subsidies for individuals to purchase coverage. He denied it was a voucher program, calling it instead a ‘cafeteria-type plan.’ ‘We have to teach people the entitlement mentality makes you more accustomed to a socialist lifestyle,’ Scott said.”
Tim Scott in 2011: “To truly get our fiscal house in order, we need a long term strategy that reforms our entitlement programs.”
Scott has criticized the “cost” of unions, and proudly touts devastating “right-to-work” laws.
Post and Courier: “Scott touts S.C.’s right-to-work status”
Post and Courier: “State Rep. Tim Scott wants South Carolina to do more to protect what he sees as the state’s biggest job recruitment tool, its right-to-work laws, from any possible federal encroachment.”
Washington Examiner: “Sen. Tim Scott is introducing legislation to curb union power and help workers who want to avoid unionization.”
Tim Scott in 2011: “No question. I had about 70 union protesters saying that I was anti-union at my office just last week because of the results of my stance with Boeing […] I believe that that is a part of the agenda that blocks job creation in America […] We have to look at the productivity and the cost that unions bring to force, bring to bear on our economy.”
To this day, Scott is still calling to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Tim Scott: “I will continue to work towards the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and to replace it with solutions that will tackle health care costs and improve access.”
