DNC Statement on Black Maternal Health Week
April 11, 2025
To mark the start of Black Maternal Health Week, DNC Chair Ken Martin and Associate Chair Congresswoman Joyce Beatty released the following statement:
“Black women are three and a half times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts in America, and Donald Trump is actively working against the safeguards and research that would improve this glaring disparity.
“Black women should not have to live in fear during the course of their pregnancy or need to fight to receive quality health care. Yet, the MAGA Trump administration is working to sabotage Medicaid, which covers two-thirds of all births for Black mothers, to priding himself on disproportionately ripping reproductive health from Black women by overturning Roe, it’s clear that Trump and his loyal MAGA Republicans are focused on worsening health outcomes for Black mothers instead of improving them. While Trump does everything in his power to rip away health care from Black mothers, Democrats are fighting back to ensure Black mothers have the care they deserve.”
