DNC Statement on Court Ruling on Arizona Abortion Ban

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement following the Pima County Superior Court ruling that allowed into effect a 1901 law banning abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest:

Women in Arizona no longer have the freedom to make their own health care decisions after the Pima County Superior Court allowed an abortion ban to take effect, setting the state of Arizona back more than 120 years. This ban has no exceptions for survivors of rape or incest, and prison time of up to five years for doctors who provide this potentially life saving care.

As Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham push for a national abortion ban, this law is a tangible example of what life could look like if Republican politicians get their way: doctors imprisoned for doing their jobs, survivors of rape and incest being forced to give birth to their abusers’ children, and women’s lives put at risk.

There is no question – in Arizona and across the country, reproductive freedom is on the ballot. While Republicans are hellbent on taking us backward, Democrats up and down the ballot are running to protect Americans’ fundamental rights.
