DNC Statement on Diwali
October 31, 2024
To honor the beginning of Diwali, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong released the following statement:
“This Diwali, billions of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, and those of other faiths will come together to celebrate the Festival of Lights. As the South Asian community celebrates the triumph of good over evil, bold and colorful rangolis will grace their doorsteps, grandparents, aunts, and uncles will spoil their children with sweets, and loved ones across the globe will gather to light diyas and bring light and joy to families around the world.
“While we turn the page to a new year, we must also recognize we are at an inflection point in our country, facing a choice between light and dark and joy and hate. As we do every year, we must pick the path we want to chart: do we wish to return to the past or start anew? It is said we light diyas to help bring prosperity and good fortune into your home for the coming year. As Donald Trump and extreme Republicans try to divide our nation, it is worth remembering that this hopeful spirit has guided people for generations. Each year, it reminds us that the enduring light of hope, love, and unity binds us all. We wish all those celebrating a bright, festive, sweet, and safe Diwali.”
