DNC Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27, 2025
In recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement.
“Throughout history, the Jewish people have displayed strength amidst hardship and resilience amidst tragedy. In honor and tribute to those we lost more than 80 years ago, we remember the stories of the six million Jewish souls systematically murdered by the Nazis. We also commemorate other communities targeted by the Nazis: Roma and Sinti, Slavs, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and racial minorities.
“On the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we grieve the memories of those who perished, honor survivors’ testimonies, and remind ourselves ‘never again.’ As Jewish families around the world heal from the trauma inflicted on October 7th — the deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Shoah — the call of ‘never again’ is louder and stronger than ever before.
“At home and abroad, we are witnessing a frightening rise in antisemitism. As Donald Trump empowers and pardons neo-nazis and doles out senior positions to people like Elon Musk, who gave a Nazi salute during an inauguration event, we condemn bigotry in all forms. We cannot allow hatred and anger to rule our nation, and must show compassion and respect for our fellow citizens.
“We all have a responsibility to speak out against antisemitism and prejudice. Never again must we allow people to be targeted for their religion, ethnicity, nationality, or who they love. Never again must we walk away in the face of evil. We must join arms as a community, and have the morality and courage to live out the promise of ‘never again.’”
