DNC Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 16, 2023
In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie M. Rollins released the following statement:
“Today, in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 94th birthday, we reflect on his powerful legacy of fighting for justice and equal rights for all Americans. Dr. King and the civil rights movement broke down barriers, called on us to respond to ‘the fierce urgency of now,’ and pushed our country to strive to live out its full promise. Now, 60 years after the March on Washington, this is a message and legacy that is more important than ever as we confront unprecedented and insidious efforts to suppress the ability to vote and threaten our democracy.
“President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris carry Dr. King’s teachings of leading with faith, equality, justice, and service with them as they work to deliver results for the American people. President Biden and Democrats are committed to fighting to ensure every American’s civil rights are protected, especially those whose rights have been historically undermined and attacked.
“To carry on Martin Luther King’s legacy is to carry on this fight and to never turn our backs to injustice and bigotry. As Democrats, we will never stop advocating for equality and justice for all, and will always work to protect every American’s rights.”
