DNC Statement on Nikki Haley Endorsing a National Abortion Ban

In response to Nikki Haley’s anti-abortion speech at the headquarters of an extreme anti-choice group in Virginia today, DNC spokesperson Rhyan Lake released the following statement:

“It’s no surprise Nikki Haley is the latest MAGA Republican endorsing a national abortion ban – since she’s already signed an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest that threatened to throw doctors and nurses in jail. 2024 Republicans are clamoring to prove they’d be the most extreme, anti-choice nominee in history in a desperate chase to out-MAGA each other, and they’ll stop at nothing to completely ban abortion nationwide.”

As governor of South Carolina, Haley signed an extreme abortion ban that made no exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time for providing care for their patients.

TIME: “The law passed the General Assembly last week and blocks women from having abortions after 19 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Doctors who violate the law could face a fine or jail time.”

Newsweek: “Haley described herself as ‘very pro-life’ and has spent most of her political career fighting for anti-abortion legislation, including signing a law as South Carolina governor in 2016 banning the procedure in most circumstances after 19 weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is at risk.”

After Roe v. Wade was overturned, Haley celebrated and called on Republicans to pass abortion bans nationwide.

Haley: “It’s a victory for the most basic right there is – the right to life. Now starts the movement to ensure the people and their elected representatives have the power to support every mother and protect every child across the country.”

It makes sense that Haley’s speech was at the headquarters of an extreme anti-choice group that is calling on all 2024 GOP hopefuls to pledge their support for a national abortion ban.

New York Times: “‘We will oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact further protections,’ said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America.”
