DNC Statement On Nikki Haley Pledging to Sign a National Abortion Ban

In response to Nikki Haley pledging to sign a national abortion ban in New Hampshire today, DNC National Press Secretary and Rapid Response Director Ammar Moussa released the following statement:

“Nikki Haley has told us over and over that she’s an anti-abortion extremist, with the record to back it up. Her pledge today to sign a national abortion ban is just another reminder of what’s at stake. By joining the likes of Donald Trump, Tim Scott, Mike Pence, and more in endorsing extreme abortion bans, Haley is proving that the race for the MAGA base is all about being the most extreme, anti-abortion candidate.”

As a reminder, Nikki Haley signed an extreme abortion ban into law as governor of South Carolina, which had ZERO exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time.

TIME: “The law passed the General Assembly last week and blocks women from having abortions after 19 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Doctors who violate the law could face a fine or jail time.”

Newsweek: “Haley described herself as ‘very pro-life’ and has spent most of her political career fighting for anti-abortion legislation, including signing a law as South Carolina governor in 2016 banning the procedure in most circumstances after 19 weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is at risk.”

Haley also celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade and called on Republicans across the country to pass abortion bans.

Haley: “It’s a victory for the most basic right there is – the right to life. Now starts the movement to ensure the people and their elected representatives have the power to support every mother and protect every child across the country.”

Just last month, Haley embraced federal government action on abortion at the headquarters of SBA Pro-Life America, an anti-choice extremist group calling on 2024 Republicans to endorse national abortion bans.

Haley: “I do believe there is a federal role on abortion.”

“I said I want to save as many babies and help as many moms as possible. That is my goal. To do that at the federal level, the next president must find national consensus.”

Haley isn’t the only 2024 Republican to back a national abortion ban while campaigning in New Hampshire — Tim Scott, Mike Pence, and Asa Hutchinson all also recently said in New Hampshire that they would sign a federal ban.

Tim Scott: “20-week ban? Definitely.”

Mike Pence: “[I will] look for ways to advance the sanctity of life at the national level.”

Asa Hutchinson: “I’ll sign pro-life legislation.”
