DNC Statement on the Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement on the 61st anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:

“When President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it enshrined the tools to combat discrimination, advance racial and gender equality, and secure voting rights for millions of Americans of color. The landmark law outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It also prohibits the unequal application of voter registration requirements and bans racial segregation in schools, workplaces, and public accommodations.

“Today, the Democratic party stands alongside countless Americans, past and present, continuing to fight for our nation’s liberties even as Donald Trump and Republicans work to undo decades of progress. By attacking our voting rights, undermining protections for the LGBTQ+ community, and ripping away Medicaid and other critical resources from underserved communities, Trump is destroying everything leaders of the Civil Rights era worked to create.

“Donald Trump may have built his career on discrimination and racism, but Democrats refuse to allow him to perpetuate such hate in the highest office.”
