DNC Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20, 2021
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC LGBTQ Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes released the following statement to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance: “This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the lives lost due to anti-trans violence and hatred in what has already become the deadliest year on record for the transgender and gender non-conforming community, particularly transgender women of color. “Each and every life lost represents a family broken, a friend forever changed, or a community in mourning. Earlier this year, President Biden established a first-of-its-kind, White House-led interagency working group to address the epidemic of violence facing transgender and gender non-conforming people. The work of this task force will be critical for creating a safer future for the transgender community. “Today, we mourn the lives lost due to senseless violence. Tomorrow, we reaffirm and rededicate ourselves to enacting the change necessary to create a future where no one is forced to hide or live in fear.” |
