DNC Statement on Trump’s Insulting Treatment of Miss Universe Winner
September 30, 2016
WASHINGTON — DNC Hispanic Caucus Chair Iris Martinez released the following statement:
“During Monday night’s debate, when Hillary Clinton exposed Donald Trump’s long history of insulting women, she told the story of Miss Universe Winner Alicia Machado, whom Trump called ‘Miss Piggy’ and ‘Miss Housekeeping,’ because she is Latina. Her humiliation must have been unbearable, being paraded before dozens of reporters while she exercised and Trump explained that she clearly needed to lose weight.
“Trump should have used the opportunity to apologize. He should have apologized to women and their families who are working hard to reach the American dream. He should have apologized for calling other women ‘fat pigs,’ ‘slobs’ and ‘dogs.’ Instead, he doubled down on his comments this week, making more insulting comments about Ms. Machado’s physical appearance.
“Is this the way you would like a man to talk to your daughters, sisters, mothers? Is this the type of man you would like to lead this country?
“Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of behavior we’ve come to expect from Trump, who started his campaign by calling Mexican immigrants ‘rapists’ and drug dealers.
“We cannot afford to elect someone who regularly insults women and minorities. We need to elect leaders who respect women and Latinos, and who want to expand opportunity for Americans of all backgrounds. We must elect Hillary Clinton as our next president and Democrats up and down the ballot across the country.”
