Donald Trump’s Anti-Abortion Extremism is Leading to Cruel Bans Across the Country
January 12, 2024
In response to Donald Trump bragging about his role in allowing Republicans to push for extreme abortion bans across the country, DNC National Press Secretary Sarafina Chitika released the following statement:
“MAGA Republicans’ extreme crusade to rip away women’s basic reproductive freedoms would not be possible without one man: Donald Trump. Because of Trump, women in Kansas, New Hampshire, Idaho, and across the country are now facing severe threats to accessing basic reproductive health care while members of the 2024 GOP field are on board with a sweeping national abortion ban. Trump called the end of Roe v. Wade a ‘miracle,’ but American women know his presidency was nothing short of a nightmare for their fundamental rights – and it’s only set to get worse if he returns to office.”
Donald Trump this week once again took credit for extreme abortion bans across the country and said he is “proud” of his role in overturning Roe v. Wade.
Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”
Rolling Stone: “Trump Says He’s ‘Proud’ to Have ‘Terminated’ Abortion Rights”
The Guardian: “Donald Trump claims credit for ‘miracle’ of overturning right to abortion”
USA Today: “Trump is ‘proud’ about taking away abortion rights. Republicans will keep losing because of it.”

Kansas Republicans have introduced a near-total abortion ban.
Kansas Reflector: “House GOP lawmakers introduce bill imposing near-total ban on abortion in Kansas”
“Eight Kansas House Republicans introduced a bill crafted to implement a near-total ban on clinical abortions and forbid distribution of pharmaceutical drugs to end pregnancies, while also authorizing individuals to file lawsuits against doctors and others who helped someone obtain an abortion.”
MAGA Republicans in New Hampshire held a hearing on their proposed extreme 15-day abortion ban that includes no exceptions for rape or incest and threatens health care providers with felony charges.
WMUR: “Constitutional protections for abortion, ban after 15 days discussed in Concord”
NBC News: “New Hampshire Republicans propose ’15-day’ abortion ban”
New Hampshire House Bill 1248: “This bill prohibits abortion, other than for a medical emergency, if the gestational age of the fetus is more than 15 days. … Any health care provider who knowingly performs or induces an abortion in violation of this subdivision … shall be guilty of a class B felony.”
Idaho Republicans’ extreme abortion ban is now allowed to be enforced.
Associated Press: “The Supreme Court is allowing Idaho to enforce its strict abortion ban, even in medical emergencies”
CBS News: “Enacted in 2020, Idaho’s measure makes it a felony for doctors to perform most abortions, with an exception for procedures performed when necessary to save the life of the mother. The law took effect when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, joining so-called trigger bans in more than a dozen states that went into force following the high court’s ruling.”
REMINDER: Trump is running campaign ads touting his unique role in overturning Roe v. Wade that paved the way for these extreme abortion bans across the country.
Trump campaign radio ad: “And Trump nominated conservative judges, leading to Roe v. Wade being overturned.”
FWIW: “This week, we found more evidence that the Trump campaign has no interest in ‘moderating’ on the issue of abortion. On Monday, his team began running new Facebook video ads targeting voters in Iowa, referring to Trump as ‘THE MOST Pro-Life President in history.’”
Trump supports a national abortion ban and has repeatedly bragged about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade.
Trump: “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”
Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”
Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”
Trump: “We’ll pick something that’s going to be very, very good for pro-life … I’m going to be in there pushing.”
Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all [options].”
Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”
Trump is not the only anti-abortion extremist in the 2024 GOP primary – Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis both also have records of ripping away women’s freedoms and would sign a national abortion ban into law.
Fox News: “Nikki Haley, 2024 Republican candidate, vows to sign federal abortion ban if elected president”
New York Times: “Nikki Haley Says She Would Have Signed Six-Week Abortion Ban as Governor”
Politico: “Haley, who ‘often clashed with members of her party because she labeled them insufficiently conservative’ on abortion,
- ‘co-sponsored legislation in 2009 mandating a 24-hour waiting period between a woman’s abortion consultation and the procedure itself’
- ‘voted to end abortion coverage for victims of rape and incest in the state health plan for employees’
- ‘signed the most conservative abortion bill South Carolina Republicans were able to pass through both chambers at the time,’ and the law did not include exceptions for rape and incest.”
Kirsten Welker: “Would you support a 15-week federal limit?”
Haley: “I would support anything that would pass.”
Haley: “Whatever we can get 60 Senate votes on, isn’t that better than what we have now? And if it’s– if it’s six weeks, that’s great. If it’s 15 weeks, that’s great.”
New York Times: “DeSantis Says He Would Sign a 15-Week Abortion Ban as President”
DeSantis: “As president, I’m going to welcome pro-life policies across the board at both [state and federal] levels.”
Radio Iowa: “Would you sign the nationwide 15-week [abortion] ban that the Faith and Freedom Coalition supports?”
DeSantis: “So I’ve said from the beginning of this, as president, you put pro-life legislation on my desk, I’m going to look favorably and support the legislation.”
Tucker Carlson: “You signed a ban on abortion after six weeks in Florida. Would you do the same as president, nationally?”
DeSantis: “I’m proud to have been a pro-life governor and I will be a pro life-president, so of course I want to sign pro-life legislation.”
