“Everything is About to Get Really Expensive”: Trump’s Erratic Trade War Pushes Prices Even Higher and Abandons American Workers
August 7, 2025

As a result of today’s escalation of his ongoing trade war, Donald Trump’s tariffs are now taxing the vast majority of goods coming into the U.S., and Americans are suffering the consequences. Under Trump, inflation has accelerated, and the manufacturing sector has lost 28,000 jobs since he took office. Now, Trump is imposing additional inflationary tariffs that will only increase prices on working families who are already struggling to afford everything, from gas to groceries.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump has dragged us into an unnecessary trade war that’s already caused economic chaos — and the worst is yet to come. Americans are bracing for even higher prices as Trump continues to cost Americans their jobs and ravage the manufacturing sector. After failing to deliver on his trade ‘deals’ and extending the deadline again and again, Trump is imposing additional trade policies that will devastate working families who are already struggling and kill small businesses that power our economy. Trump was elected on the promise that he would lower costs — but his economic agenda is making life less affordable for working Americans.”
While Trump’s reckless trade war is killing jobs across the country and costing working families and small businesses billions, he has failed to secure the 200 “deals” that he promised. Thanks to Trump’s erratic trade war, manufacturing contracted for the fifth month in a row.
As inflation worsens and the job market tanks under Trump, consumers’ views on job opportunities reached their gloomiest level since March 2021. Only one-quarter of U.S. adults say that Trump’s policies have helped them since he took office.
