FACT CHECK: Mike Pence Owns Trump’s Record On Taxes, Health Care, And Russia

Here’s the only thing you need to know about Mike Pence’s new policy agenda: It’s filled with lies, shameless hypocrisy, and attempts to rewrite his own record. But there’s no escaping the facts – Mike Pence stood by Donald Trump for four years and supported Trump’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, give away billions of dollars in tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations, and sell out our allies to cozy up to Russia.

Mike Pence is doubling down on the Trump-Pence tax cuts, which gave away billions of dollars to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans while leaving middle-class families behind.

Washington Post: “The combination of Trump’s 2017 tax cut and the lack of any serious spending restraint helped both the deficit and the debt soar.”

Axios: “Americans have gotten $0.01 more in bonuses since Trump’s tax cuts.”

Forbes: “Trump Tax Cuts Helped Billionaires Pay Less Taxes Than The Working Class In 2018”

CBS News: “Big companies have long relied on strategies to reduce their tax bills. But the new tax law is making it even easier, with a new analysis finding that 60 profitable Fortune 500 companies paid no taxes on a total of $79 billion of profits earned in 2018.”

It’s especially hypocritical that Pence’s plan calls for affordable health care, considering Pence helped lead Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and even cast the tie-breaking vote on the motion to proceed on the American Health Care Act of 2017 to repeal the ACA.

The Guardian: “Mike Pence promises Obamacare repeal but shares few details on alternative”

NPR: “In his remarks Pence praised the president’s ‘resolve’ and said Trump worked ‘tirelessly over the last couple weeks to get Congress to repeal and replace’ the health care law.”

7/25/17: Pence voted yea; agreed to 51-50.

Let’s be clear: Mike Pence – the man who led the Trump administration’s failed coronavirus task force, lied about testing, and praised Trump as he downplayed the pandemic – has no credibility on issues related to the pandemic.

Politico: “But in the face of a historic pandemic, Pence’s leadership style has often resulted in decisions that health experts view as too slow, too consensus-oriented and too focused on public perception.”

New York Times: “Vice President Mike Pence encouraged governors on Monday to adopt the administration’s explanation that a rise in testing was a reason behind new coronavirus outbreaks, even though testing data has shown that such a claim is misleading. … It was a misleading message publicly emphasized by President Trump at a meeting earlier in the day.”

New York Times: “The vice president falsely claimed that increased testing ‘is generating’ more cases, among other exaggerations and inaccurate claims.”

Wall Street Journal: “Pence has overstated the amount of coronavirus-related medical equipment distributed by a Trump administration program on multiple occasions, according to public data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.”

Mike Pence In April 2020: “But I have to tell you, having been leading this task force for now more than a month I couldn’t be more proud of not just the president’s leadership, but all of those that have been advising this president every step of the way.”

A little reminder for the former vice president: After Trump and Pence spent YEARS failing on infrastructure, it was Joe Biden who finally delivered the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to “invest in critical infrastructure projects that are actually needed by states and localities.”

Washington Post: “Pence promises ‘big’ infrastructure bill as he address gathering of mayors”

Washington Post: “After repeatedly touting infrastructure during his 2016 campaign, Trump has through four years in office failed to advance infrastructure legislation through Congress.”

New York Times: “How Biden Got the Infrastructure Deal Trump Couldn’t”

Would Mike Pence care to explain how he plans to “stand strong against Russian aggression” when his record shows he spent four years defending Donald Trump as he cozied up to Putin, sold out our allies, undermined U.S. intelligence agencies, and threatened to withhold military aid from Ukraine?

CNN: “Pence defends Trump over Ukraine call, contradicting his 2016 comments on foreign interference”

ABC News: “Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday offered a full-throated defense of President Donald Trump against the Democrats’ new impeachment inquiry, attempting to justify the president’s push to investigate Vice President Joe Biden and his son’s relationship with Ukraine as ‘worth looking into.’”

USA Today: “Vice President Mike Pence may be ‘purposefully misleading’ Congress about a September conversation between Pence and Ukraine’s president, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee told Pence Tuesday.”

BBC News: “US President Donald Trump has defended Russia over claims of interference in the 2016 presidential election … Vice-President Mike Pence, in a speech at the US Department of Commerce, defended the summit and praised President Trump.”
