For Nikki Haley, The NRA Comes Before the Safety of Americans
January 5, 2024
In response to Nikki Haley continuing to side with the gun lobby over the safety of our communities, DNC National Press Secretary Sarafina Chitika released the following statement:
“Nikki Haley is making clear where her priorities lie: siding with the NRA and the rest of the gun lobby over our children’s safety. Haley has time and time again refused to support commonsense gun safety legislation and even opposed expanding background checks in the wake of the tragic shootings in South Carolina while she was governor – and it’s no surprise given she received an A+ rating from the NRA. President Biden, meanwhile, worked across the aisle to enact the most significant bipartisan gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years – something MAGA extremist Nikki Haley has made clear she would never even consider.”
Haley has consistently sided with the gun lobby over the safety of our communities.
USA Today: “‘You’ve always got a partner in me,’ Haley told NRA delegates.”
2014: The NRA Political Victory Fund endorsed Haley and gave her an A+ rating.
Haley has made clear throughout her campaign that she refuses to support gun safety legislation.
USA Today: “After Nashville school shooting, Nikki Haley tells voters she is against gun control legislation”
“Nikki Haley’s town hall here in one of the first primary states opened against the backdrop of a deadly school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. The Republican presidential hopeful started her pitch by addressing the shooting and telling voters she wants more metal detectors, not more gun control legislation. She called for schools to have one entrance and to use the metal detectors there.”
The Messenger: “Nikki Haley Rejects ‘Red Flag’ Laws at CNN Town Hall”
“Nikki Haley said at Sunday’s CNN town hall that she opposes gun restrictions known as ‘red flag’ laws. … Red flag laws prevent individuals who are considered to be a threat to themselves or others, as determined by a court, from buying or possessing a firearm.”
Washington Examiner: “[Haley] emphasized the need to ‘end gun-free zones,’ pinning blame on locations where guns are heavily restricted for shootings, because ‘nobody else is going to be able to protect themselves.’”
Haley opposed expanding background checks in the wake of the tragic shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church when she was governor of South Carolina.
Washington Times: “South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Sunday said the botched FBI background check that allowed the man accused of the massacre at a historic black church in Charleston to buy the handgun used in the attack is tragic but does not justify expanding such checks.”
