House GOP Budget Gets a Head Start on Trump’s Project 2025 Plans to Rip Away Reproductive Freedom

As the House GOP pushes a budget that takes cues from Trump’s anti-choice Project 2025 agenda, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

“Donald Trump wants to create a national nightmare where every single woman in America lives under a draconian abortion ban – and his MAGA minions are already working on a plan to help him make that a reality on day one. MAGA Republicans in Congress are plotting to use their budget as a Trojan horse to further undermine access to life-saving abortion care, even as women are being turned away from emergency rooms thanks to abortion bans Trump made possible. With Trump and the MAGA GOP showing us in real time just how far they’ll go to rip away our basic rights, the stakes for reproductive freedoms are higher than ever this November.”

NEW: Donald Trump’s MAGA minions in Congress are already scheming to use their budget to push anti-abortion policies akin to Trump’s extreme, anti-choice Project 2025 agenda.

Rolling Stone: “Republican lawmakers are trying to use an unrelated budget bill to allow states to bar patients from having emergency abortions

“As they allocate next year’s funding to federal agencies, hard-right legislators on the House Appropriations Committee are taking cues from the right-wing Heritage Foundation, the think tank behind Project 2025, as well as the conservative Christian legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom, whose lawyers helped draft the anti-abortion law the Supreme Court used to overturn Roe v. Wade […]

“Riders and cuts in the Republicans’ budget this year seek to block funding to enforce President Joe Biden’s executive order protecting emergency medical treatment for pregnant women, funding for hospitals that provide abortion training, and funding to implement abortion-related provisions of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. […]

“It’s not just EMTALA that is coming under fire in the House GOP’s new budget: A separate provision, also proposed by the subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, would block funding for any hospital that trains doctors to perform or assist with abortions if the hospital ‘provides or requires such training for any participant in such program without the participant first voluntarily electing to opt in to undergo such training,’ or if the hospital “subjects any participant in such program to discrimination” if they decline to opt in. […]

“In addition to cutting funding for the Office on Women’s Health, this year’s Republican budget would fully eliminate the Title X Family Planning Program, the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and Healthy Start, the federal program meant to address infant mortality.”

If they get their way, Trump and his MAGA allies will rip away reproductive freedoms across the country.

“Anti-abortion leaders have been laying the groundwork to curtail contraception access for many decades […]

“The political playbook for attacking birth control shares some similarities with the playbook for attacking abortion — a slow and steady chipping away of rights and access.”

Politico: “Trump allies prepare to infuse ‘Christian nationalism’ in second administration”

“It also proposes increasing surveillance of abortion and maternal mortality reporting in the states, compelling the Food and Drug Administration to revoke approval of ‘chemical abortion drugs’ and protecting ‘religious and moral’ objections for employers who decline contraception coverage for employees.”

New York Times: “Trump Allies Plan New Sweeping Abortion Restrictions”

“Behind the scenes, specific anti-abortion plans being proposed by Mr. Trump’s allies are sweeping and legally sophisticated. Some of their proposals would rely on enforcing the Comstock Act, a long-dormant law from 1873, to criminalize the shipping of any materials used in an abortion — including abortion pills, which account for the majority of abortions in America […]

“Policies under consideration include banning the use of fetal stem cells in medical research for diseases like cancer, rescinding approval of abortion pills at the F.D.A. and stopping hundreds of millions in federal funding for Planned Parenthood.”

Rolling Stone: “Inside the MAGA Plan to Attack Birth Control, Surveil Women and Ban the Abortion Pill”

“Those plans — and many more, including proposals to attack contraception access, use the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase ‘abortion surveillance’ and data collection, rescind a Department of Defense policy to ‘prohibit abortion travel funding,’ punish states that require health insurance plans to cover abortion, and retool a law that is currently protecting pregnant women with life-threatening conditions — are outlined in Project 2025’s ‘Mandate for Leadership.’ […]

“Elsewhere, Severino complains that the CDC’s ‘abortion surveillance’ system is ‘woefully inadequate,’ and proposes turning the agency into a kind of snitch network that would collect data about who had abortions and where — and punish any states that refuse to share that information.”

Axios: “‘Department of Life’: Trump allies plot abortion crackdown for second term”

“In the document, Heritage asserts that the federal health department should ‘return to being known as the Department of Life.’ […]

“As part of its ‘Life Agenda,’ the foundation also calls for the elimination of the HHS Reproductive Healthcare Access Task Force, developed by the Biden administration just months prior to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

“Heritage says this team should be replaced by ‘a pro-life task force to ensure that all of the department’s divisions seek to use their authority to promote the life and health of women and their unborn children.’”
