ICYMI: Democrats Make Stakes Clear as Trump, Extreme Republicans’ Plan to Gut Medicaid Comes at the Cost of Working Americans

Last week, the DNC raised the alarm in local outlets across the country that Republicans are planning to rip health care away from millions of Americans in order to pay for Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires. As new reporting this weekend confirms, Republicans are hellbent on achieving devastating cuts to Medicaid and other critical programs in their upcoming budget proposal to meet Trump’s demands. Democrats will hold Trump and Republicans accountable and protect working people’s health care.

Take a look at some of the coverage below:

Chicago Sun-Times: GOP plan to cut Medicaid expansion could cost coverage for 900K Illinoisans, Dems say

[Tina Sfondeles, 1/29/25]

“Illinois has a ‘trigger’ law that would automatically end Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansions in the state if federal funding is cut — which means 931,169 Illinoisans would lose their health coverage, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“Democratic National Committee Executive Director Sam Cornale is sounding the alarm on the potential cut, accusing Trump of focusing on ‘the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working Illinoisans.’

“‘Make no mistake, it’s not just Illinoisans’ pocketbooks but also their health that’s on the line,’ Cornale said in a statement to the Sun-Times. ‘If Trump follows through on these threats, Democrats will make sure those Illinoisans know exactly who is responsible.’”

Michigan Advance: Dems say nearly 1M Michiganders could be impacted by proposed cuts to Medicaid

[Jon King, 1/29/25]

“A new analysis from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) indicates more than 900,000 Michiganders could have their Medicaid benefits cut if plans move forward by the Republican-controlled Congress to potentially slash the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion to help pay for tax cuts and other Trump administration priorities. …

“‘Trump lied to the American people for months on the campaign trail, promising to lower their costs on Day One,’ said DNC Executive Director Sam Cornale. ‘It’s clear from Trump’s first week in office that he’s focused on the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working Michiganders.’

“Cornale said the 910,809 Michiganders who rely on the ACA expansion would see their health care costs skyrocket if Medicaid benefits were gutted ‘to foot the bill for more tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.’ …

“‘Make no mistake, it’s not just Michiganders’ pocketbooks but also their health that’s on the line. If Trump follows through on these threats, Democrats will make sure those Michiganders know exactly who is responsible,’ said Cornale.”

Macomb Daily:  DNC criticizes Trump, GOP for potential elimination of Medicaid expansion

[Jameson Cook, 1/29/25]

“Some 900,000 Michigan residents on Medicaid could lose coverage if the decade-old expansion is reversed by the GOP-controlled Congress and President Donald Trump. …

“DNC Executive Director Sam Cornale accused Trump and his ‘extreme allies in Congress’ of seeking to ‘rip health care away from Michiganders in order to offset their billionaire tax cuts.’

“‘Democrats will fight back every step of the way,’ Cornale vowed. …

“Cornale accused Trump of lying to Americans on the campaign trail by ‘promising to lower their costs on Day One.’

“‘It’s clear from Trump’s first week in office that he’s focused on the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working Michiganders,’ he said. ‘In stark contrast, Democrats are on the side of 910,809 Michiganders who could see their costs skyrocket if Trump is successful in his plot to gut Medicaid benefits in order to foot the bill for more tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. Make no mistake, it’s not just Michiganders’ pocketbooks but also their health that’s on the line. If Trump follows through on these threats, Democrats will make sure those Michiganders know exactly who is responsible.’”

Granite Post: New analysis shows GOP plans threaten Medicaid coverage for 61,713 Granite Staters

[Colin Booth, 1/29/15]

“61,713 Granite Staters could be in jeopardy of losing their benefits if Republicans move forward with threats to lower the federal matching rate for Medicaid, shifting financial burdens onto states. Critics warn that such a cut would force New Hampshire to either shoulder the additional cost or make cuts to the existing Medicaid expansion program, potentially leaving thousands without coverage. …

“‘Trump lied to the American people for months on the campaign trail, promising to lower their costs on Day One,’ Cornale said. ‘It’s clear from Trump’s first week in office that he’s focused on the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working Granite Staters.’

“‘If Trump follows through on these threats, Democrats will make sure those Granite Staters know exactly who is responsible.’”

Washington Post: DNC defends Medicaid as Republicans consider cuts

[Meryl Kornfield and Patrick Svitek, 1/29/25]

“The Democratic National Committee is releasing an analysis this morning that shows how many Medicaid recipients could be affected in each state if House Republicans scale back Medicaid, one of the ideas mentioned in a recent New York Times story about the many options Republicans are weighing to foot the bill for the massive package of Trump priorities they are trying to design right now. …

“‘Make no mistake, it’s not just Americans’ pocketbooks but also their health that’s on the line,’ DNC chief Sam Cornale says in a statement alongside the state-by-state analysis.”

Salon: Republican plans to cut Medicaid could cost 22 million Americans their health care

[Russell Payne, 1/29/.25]

“According to an analysis of proposed cuts from the Democratic National Committee, shared with Salon, proposals to curb Medicaid expansion alone — which extends coverage to Americans with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty line — could drive nearly 22 million people off the program.

“‘Trump lied to the American people for months on the campaign trail, promising to lower their costs on Day One. It’s clear from Trump’s first week in office that he’s focused on the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working families,’ Sam Cornale, executive director of the DNC, said in a statement.

“In a state-by-state breakdown, the DNC analysis found that the Medicaid expansion proposals would affect over 5 million Californians and 2.3 million New Yorkers, as well as more than 900,000 people in Louisiana, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The proposals would also put some 640,000 Arizonans, 689,000 Oregonians and 730,000 Virginians at risk of losing insurance.

“‘Americans all over the country rely on Medicaid for health care coverage and these cuts would devastate families, including in many communities that carried Trump this election cycle,’ Cornale said.”

The Hill: Democrats: Americans’ health on the line if Medicaid scaled back

[Ailia Zehra, 1/29/25]

“Medicaid cuts would affect around 22 million people in states that expanded the program, according to a new analysis by the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

“‘The state-by-state breakdown shows that gutting the program would involve decimating rural communities across the country,’ the analysis reads. Ten states have not expanded Medicaid, as is allowed under the Affordable Care Act.

“‘Make no mistake, it’s not just Americans’ pocketbooks but also their health that’s on the line. Americans all over the country rely on Medicaid for health care coverage and these cuts would devastate families, including in many communities that carried Trump this election cycle,’ DNC Executive Director Sam Cornale said in a statement accompanying the analysis.

“‘If Trump follows through on these threats, Democrats will make sure those voters know exactly who is responsible.’ …

“‘As Trump and his extreme allies in Congress plot to rip health care away from some 22 million Americans in order to offset their billionaire tax cuts, Democrats will fight back every step of the way,’ said the DNC’s Wednesday statement.”
