| As state legislators in Texas worked through the night to jam through one of the most egregious voter suppression bills in the country, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison released a video speaking directly to Texans and encouraging them to call their state Representative and Senator to express opposition to Senate Bill 7. Harrison also called on the American people to ask their Republican Senators to pass the For The People Act, which will make it more difficult for Republicans across the country to take away people’s basic right to have their voices heard at the ballot box.

CHAIR HARRISON: Hey folks, I wanted to talk to you tonight about the egregious anti-voter bill we’re seeing in Texas.
You know, President Biden said that this is part of an assault on democracy. And he’s right.
Republicans are intent on taking away your freedom to vote. This is Jim Crow 2.0, plain and simple.
This bill has some of the worst anti-voter measures in the country. What they’ve come up with has got my blood boiling:
- They want to ban drive-thru voting
- They want to cut back early voting hours
- They want to further clamp down on vote-by-mail rules
And they’re jamming it through on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend.
If they’re intent on jamming this bill through, I’m intent on making sure we fight back with every breath in our bodies.
What happens with this bill, my friends, what happens with this bill in Texas isn’t the end of our fight to protect your voting rights.
That’s why I need you to call your Republican Senators and tell them to pass the For the People Act in Congress right now. If you live in Texas, call your state Representative and your Senator and tell them you oppose this Senate Bill 7, and tell them that if they support it, you’ll remember that next November. |
