ICYMI: DNC Fights Back in Court, Filing Briefs in Three States to Block MAGA Republicans’ Attempts to Silence Voters and Winning a Major Case in Wisconsin
February 24, 2025

In the past month, the DNC has filed three briefs challenging MAGA Republicans’ attempts to disenfranchise voters in Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia and won a big case before the Wisconsin Supreme Court
As Republicans continue to launch a nationwide campaign to infringe on Americans’ voting rights and undermine democracy, the DNC is tackling Republican challenges head-on. This month alone, the DNC fought back against North Carolina Republicans’ attempts to steal a fair and free election in both federal and state court, opposed Republicans’ challenge to mail voting in Nevada, and filed an amicus brief against MAGA Republicans’ attempt to enact new state election rules in Georgia that would cause delays in election results and sow distrust in our election system.
Meanwhile, the DNC also won a massive case in Wisconsin, which will allow the state to continue to provide mobile sites to voters and limit the ability of individual Republicans to clog up the legal system with meritless attacks on the right to vote in the future.
Politicians don’t decide elections. Voters do. That’s why Democrats stand firm in our commitment to protecting Americans’ right to vote across the country.
Take a look at some of the coverage below:
In Nevada:
Rolling Stone: Dems Seek to Block GOP Attack on Mail-In Voting
[Nikki McCann Ramirez, 2/20/25]
“The DNC is asking the Ninth Circuit Court to dismiss the RNC appeals on several grounds, including a lack of standing and the reality that Nevada’s mail-in voting system is ‘consistent with longstanding election-administration practice’ followed by more than a dozen states that allow mail-in ballots received after the election to be counted so long as they comply with postmarking deadlines.”
Nevada Independent: Democrats ask appeals court to toss GOP lawsuit over Nevada’s late-arriving mail ballots
[Gabby Birenbaum, 2/20/25]
“On Thursday, the Democratic National Committee asked a federal appeals court to deny an appeal filed in a nearly yearlong legal case brought by state and national Republicans seeking to end Nevada’s practice of accepting mail ballots as many as four days after an election, as long as they were postmarked by Election Day.”
Washington Post: Live Updates
[Mariana Alfaro, 2/20/25]
“The Democratic National Committee is challenging the Republican National Committee’s effort to block a law in Nevada that allows mail ballots postmarked by Election Day and received within four days of the election to be counted. On Thursday, the Democrats filed a brief in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that the RNC failed to prove that it was harmed by Nevada’s ballot deadline.”
In North Carolina:
Salon: DNC intervenes in North Carolina Supreme Court fight, accuses GOP of trying to “steal an election”
[Russell Payne, 2/18/25]
“In the brief filed Tuesday, the DNC argues that the state Supreme Court let the earlier Wake County Superior Court decision stand. ‘Voters may not be retroactively disenfranchised based upon technical defects in their voter registration,’ the brief states. Republicans, it continues, ‘have provided no evidence that any of the voters they challenge are not qualified to register and vote, so this Court should uphold its long-established precedents rejecting challenges to eligible voters’ ballots based on technical defects in their registration, consistent with federal and state law prohibiting retroactive disenfranchisement of voters.’”
CBS 17: DNC joins federal fight in NC Supreme Court election challenge
[Deana Harley, 2/18/25]
“The DNC filed an opposition brief on Tuesday with the North Carolina Supreme Court to ensure they don’t unfairly take up Griffin’s case. Griffin, who is trying to get a seat on that very court, wants his case moved to that court rather than an appeals court.”
In Georgia:
New York Times: Democrats, Under New Leader, Join Fight Against Georgia Election Rules
[Nick Corasaniti, 2/7/25]
“In one of its first official moves under its new leader, Ken Martin, the Democratic National Committee is wading into a lawsuit over Georgia’s much-publicized and still-disputed election rules, including a requirement that ballots be counted by hand.”

[Jane C. Timm, 2/7/25]
“The Democratic National Committee filed an amicus brief in an election lawsuit today, urging a Georgia court to block new rules that required hand-counting of ballots and allowed local boards power to conduct ‘reasonable inquiry’ into election results.”
Atlanta Journal-Constitution: DNC joins legal fight against Georgia voting rules changes
[Greg Bluestein, 2/7/25]
“The Democratic National Committee filed a legal briefing Friday seeking to block a controversial rewrite of election rules in Georgia that would mandate an election night ballot count and require a vague ‘reasonable inquiry’ before certifying results.”
The Hill: DNC wades into Georgia election rules fight as new leader takes reins
[Ashleigh Fields, 2/7/25]
“The DNC filed an amicus brief in the case Friday, arguing the ‘Hand Count’ and ‘Reasonable Inquiry’ rules each violate the Georgia Election Code and exceed the board’s statutory authority.”
WSAV: DNC joins fight to block Georgia election rules
[Dylan James, 2/7/25]
“The Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed an amicus brief in an election lawsuit in Georgia over election rules.
“The brief, which has seen a long-fought battle in the state, urged a Georgia court to block new rules that required hand-counting of ballots and allowed local boards power to conduct ‘reasonable inquiry’ into election results. The committee argues that the two rules violate rule-making processes and exceed the power of the state election board that implemented them.”
Center Square: National Democrats file brief opposing Georgia election changes
[Kim Jarrett, 2/7/25]
“The Democratic National Committee is joining others in opposition to new rules approved by the Georgia State Election Board just before the November 2024 primary.
“The amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court of Georgia focuses on two of the rules. One is a required hand count of ballots. The other rule in contention would allow a ‘reasonable inquiry’ into the result.”
In Wisconsin:
Associated Press: Wisconsin Supreme Court rules Republican had no right to bring lawsuit challenging mobile voting
[Scott Bauer, 2/24/25]
“A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a Republican Party official lacked the standing to bring a lawsuit challenging the use of a mobile voting van in 2022. …
“Racine, the Democratic National Committee and others argue that nothing in state law prohibits the use of voting vans. City officials said that in light of the state Supreme Court ruling, they plan to use the van again during the state’s elections in April, calling it an important tool for ensuring all voters can cast their ballots.”
