ICYMI: Voters Energized for Critical Fall Elections Following Recordbreaking Voter Turnout in VA Democratic Primary
June 18, 2025
Ahead of November elections, Virginia Democrats are touting a historic slate of Democratic nominees — one of the largest ever fielded in state history. Yesterday’s elections also saw the highest Democratic early voting turnout in a primary this year — a major show of voters’ enthusiasm to elect Democratic candidates heading into November. From candidates running to recordbreaking Democratic turnout, Virginians have sent a message to the nation that they are ready to hold Trump and Republicans accountable for their dangerous, cost-hiking agenda.
Read the coverage below:
Axios Richmond: “Virginia Democrats set early voting record ahead of 2025 primaries”
“Virginia Democrats saw their highest early voting turnout in a primary this year, with some of the greatest number of votes coming from Richmond-area districts. …
“As of June 15 — the day after early voting wrapped up — over 204,500 Virginians had cast early ballots, per the Virginia Public Access Project.
“More than 92%, or over 189,000, were in the Democratic primary.
“That’s nearly 65,000 more votes than the votes recorded for the Democratic primary in 2021, per VPAP.”
Washington Post: “Nearly 158,000 people had cast votes in Democratic primaries as of Thursday — up from 124,000 at the same point in Democratic primaries four years ago, when the party had a hotly contested, five-way primary for governor, according to analysis of the latest available data by the Virginia Public Access Project. …
“The totals also show a marked surge from a year ago, when about 120,000 voters cast ballots in a Democratic presidential primary.”
ALX Now: “The city can expect to see a turnout of 9-13% today, according to Angie Turner, the city’s registrar and director of elections.
“‘If you look back historically, in 2013 we did have a June Democratic primary for the same races, lieutenant governor and attorney general,’ Turner said. ‘In that election, we were right at about 6%, so we’ve already exceeded that, because we are at a total of 8.67% as of noon.’”
Blue Virginia on X: “In the end, turnout for yesterday’s VA Dem primaries will be over 470k. Which is excellent, actually, relative to 2021, 2017, 2013, etc., esp. in that there was no gov primary on the ballot.”
